We are excited to present the conference portfolio of “¡Watch it! – Freedom of Artistic Expression. Cultural Policies for Democracy” in Luxembourg.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Luxembourg, the Compendium of Cultural Policies and Trends invites you to a day of dialogue, exchange, and debate on one of the cornerstones of democracy: freedom of artistic expression.
As democratic values face increasing political, social, and cultural pressures, this conference will explore how cultural policies can safeguard artistic freedom, address challenges around legal protection and societal perceptions, and support the resilience of artists and cultural actors.
This international cultural policy conference will examine how cultural policies can safeguard and enable freedom of artistic expression as a pillar of democratic societies and explore ways to monitor early warning signs, key markers that indicate shifts in artistic freedom and, by extension, the health of democracy, before violations occur.
Key themes and sessions (summarised):
- Freedom of Artistic Expression: Must Have or Nice to Have? – examining the necessity and limits of artistic freedom.
- Under Pressure & Under Scrutiny – addressing legislation, societal realities, and legal protection.
- Panel Discussions & Policy Labs – sharing national practices, monitoring approaches, and interactive exchanges.
- Fishbowl & Interactive Sessions – collaborative discussions on policy recommendations and solutions.
Keynote speakers will span a broad spectrum of expertise, policy officers to country-specific cultural experts and academic researchers, offering diverse perspectives on artistic freedom, its legal protection, societal challenges, and policy approaches.
This conference is both a platform for reflection and a call to action. Together, we aim to reaffirm the importance of cultural policies as a safeguard of democracy and ensure that the voices of artists remain free, diverse, and vital for our societies.
