Compendium Authors from respective countries and the European Institute for Comparative Cultural Research (ERICarts). Data collected during December 2006. Currency Exchange Rates (1st week of December, 2006)

General notes:

  1. “Istanbul: Memories of a City” – Hardcover as advertised (not discounted or used books).
  2. “Modern Art” usually starts with van Gogh and French Impressionists, in some cases in the early 20th century; museum/gallery not necessarily in the country capital.
  3. National average or typical rate in larger cities; if no public service is available, lessons from a private teacher.
  4. Not premieres or other special performances, typical repertoire (e.g. Puccini: La Bohème, Verdi: La Traviata).

Country specific notes:

  • Hungary: Pamuk book not yet available. Price for a similar length novel from the same author “New Life” is HUF 2480 (9.5 €).
  • Moldova: It is difficult to provide data on licensed music CDs in Moldova as it would, as a rule cost about 35 € for a CD and nobody imports them. Most CDs are pirate copies and the prices vary from 1.4 € to 10.5 €. Books by Pamuk are not yet available in Moldova. For comparison, one could refer to the cost of “The Da Vinci Code” and/or “Dante Circle”, translated and published in Russian, which were sold at the price of 6,5 €.
  • Poland: “Snow” is the only Pamuk book available in Polish. Its average price is about 35 PLN (9,2 Euros). There are plans to publish “My Name is Red” together with “Istanbul…” in early 2007. “New Life” will be released in 2008.
  • San Marino: The annual registration fee to attend individual twice weekly courses at San Marino Music Institute is equal to € 100.00.
  • Russia: Price of the so-called ‚budget school’ financed by the Moscow government, about 6 hours of different disciplines. Private lessons are about $20 per hour in Moscow (that figure was given for the year 2005).
  • Ukraine: Pamuk book not yet available. Price for a novel by the same author, “My Name is Red” is 6-9 €.
  • UK: Price of Pamuk book is for the paperback version as the hardback price is not available.

NOTE:
CUPIX data (2008-2014) on prices for selected cultural goods and services has been brought together with the latest PPP data from the OECD in Tables MAR.1. While the results on price levels for public arts services have been annually collected on the basis of the same definition, items selected for the table on price levels for cultural industry goods change each year depending on the latest blockbuster film, best selling CD or book that is released/sold in all European countries. Tests conducted show that there was almost no difference in the average median industry price levels on data collected in 2008-2014; therefore and as an exception, they could be merged to cover as many Compendium countries as possible.

Indicators presented in the table were selected from the 2005 OECD PPP Benchmark Data on real expenditure per capita on GDP (Table 1.8) for European countries by the ERICarts Institute. This data is based on the results of a joint survey carried out by Eurostat and the CIS countries.

Note:

* PPP = Purchasing Power Parities. PPP currency conversion rates convert to a common currency and eliminate the differences in price levels between countries in the process of conversion.

Note:
The 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014 OECD PPP Benchmark Data on average prices were added to tables MAR.3 as a means to compare different price levels in the arts and media with other sectors. The OECD converts prices to a common currency and thus intends to eliminate differences in price levels between countries. OECD Benchmarks are updated every three years and new ones will be made available as soon as the 2017 data are published (expected 2019).

Note:
The 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014 OECD PPP Benchmark Data on average prices were added to tables MAR.4 as a means to compare different price levels in the arts and media with other sectors. The OECD converts prices to a common currency and thus intends to eliminate differences in price levels between countries. OECD Benchmarks are updated every three years and new ones will be made available as soon as the 2017 data are published (expected in 2019).
