In a new report commissioned by the Council of Europe, the research centre KEA European Affairs provides a first analysis of COVID-19’s tremendous impact on the cultural and creative sector (CSS).
The report The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Cultural and Creative Sector assesses the economic and social impact of COVID-19, thereby illuminating yet again the precarity of the cultural workforce. In the second section, measures taken to combat the pandemic’s economic and social impact are presented, distinguishing between international organisations, public authorities and the private sector. An important trend has been the fundamental contribution of regional and local authorities in helping their cultural infrastructures.
The report concludes with signaling the challenges ahead, including the mobilisation of cultural workers as agents of global co-operation and the major growth of big cultural companies such as Netflix and Disney. Finally, it is stated that future policies for CSS should be aimed at: integrating artistic intervention in policy making; incorporating the cultural dimension in social policy; and adapting policies to take the digital shift better into account and to encourage collaboration and pooling of resources.
