4.3 Other relevant issues and debates

Gostiny Dvir Republic was established in Kyiv, in May 2012, as a civil society initiative to save the historical building of Gostiny Dvir (Shopping Arcade, beginning of XIX c.) from destruction. "Citizens" of Gostiny Dvir Republic support the restoration and repair of this architectural monument and its public (non-for-profit) use. Kyiv residents, participants of Gostiny Dvir Republic, created the independent cultural space where regular cultural events and educational activities are organised. At the same time, private developers regularly try to seize this area to construct a profitable trade centre. The conflict between the community and private capital rouses debates in the city council and government. However, till now Kyiv authorities have not make a decision about the historical significance of the monument and its cultural heritage.
