Ukraine/ 3.4 International cultural co-operation

3.4.4 Direct professional co-operation

Professional co-operation is developed in four main ways:

  • Cultural exchanges supported by international foundations and participation in cultural events, competitions or festivals. For example: A worldwide contemporary art festival GogolFest, after a short break, returned in 2012. That time festival was held in a new venue – an experimental mechanical factory near the subway station "Vydubychi" in Kyiv. Modern and experimental theatres, music groups and artists performed and provided master-classes as well as educational programmes for youngsters and adults. The festival events represented joint projects, for example, a French-Ukrainian performance-collage "Here and Now", and a Ukrainian-Swiss theatre project "Hamlet".
  • Another example is one of the largest music forums in Ukraine, Kyiv Music Fest which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014. During 2014, more than 150 music pieces were presented within the frames of the Fest, most of them premières, not only for Ukraine, but also demonstrating modern music culture of different countries: Austria, Belarus, China, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, France, Croatia, Czech Republic, and Sweden.
  • Commercial projects: for example, Grand Antique Salons, Fashion Days and Art-Kyiv (exhibition-auction) held annually in Mystetsky Arsenal in Kyiv.
  • Days of culture, weeks of culture, months of culture or years of culture, when events with cultural professionals are organised by public bodies. For example: Weeks of German Culture were held between September 26 – October 14, 2014, in Ukrainian cities, such as Kyiv, Rivne, Zaporizhia, Odesa, Karkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Berdiansk, and Melitopol.
  • Cultural events between local communities within the framework of traditional programmes like town-twinning, cross-border co-operation, intercultural cities, etc. An example is the Mayors' Forum of Intercultural Cities in Lutsk in August 2013.
