Switzerland/ 5.1 General legislation

5.1.8 Data protection laws

A Decree based on the Federal Law on Data Protection touches on culturally and politically relevant issues in the area of internet piracy. Issues for discussion are being raised by the collecting societies and ifpi Schweiz (Swiss National Committee of the International Federation of Producers of Phonograms and Videograms).

The Federal Law on the International Transfer of Cultural Property and the related duty to exercise diligence can be regarded, if even, as a contribution made by the Swiss Confederation to preserving the cultural heritage of humankind, and to preventing the theft, looting, and illegal import and export of cultural goods. The Law pertaining to the transfer of cultural property reflects the implementation of the corresponding 1970 UNESCO Convention. Since the enactment of this Law in June 2005, the Federal Office of Culture (BAK) maintains a unit specialised in the international trading and transfer of cultural goods.
