Since 2001, Marian Fitzgibbon is the Head of the School of Humanities in Athlone Institute of Technology. Her primary and first postgraduate qualification (MA in French, 1981) came from University College Cork where she was a Honan Scholar as well as the recipient of a general UCC Entrance Scholarship. She went on to complete an MBA through the Open University in 1996 and was accepted as a Newman Scholar to pursue a PhD in the Faculty of Commerce (Smurfit Business School).
She has worked in the education and arts sectors- Institute of Technology, Tralee; the Arts Council, UCD, and latterly, Athlone Institute of Technology. She is the author of a book on innovative management in the arts sector and has edited a cultural management handbook. In her post as Head of School, she has chaired the Heads of School of Business and Humanities group for two years and has acted on numerous sector panels: Delegation of Authority (Limerick IT); NQAI framework mapping panel for Dublin region; new course approval panels for HETAC in several IoTs; Programmatic Review groups in Letterkenny and Limerick; numerous interview panels etc.
She has also acted as a research application assessor for HETAC, the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences and several Institutes. She has addressed a number of conferences at national and regional level and has participated in regional development bodies in the economic and cultural spheres.
