Germany/ 8.1 Support to artists and other creative workers

8.1.1 Overview of strategies, programmes and direct or indirect forms of support

Artistic production and its reception by the public are furthered, on the one hand, through the funding of arts institutions (see chapter 6) and, on the other hand, through the creation of general conditions conducive to the flourishing of the arts (see chapter 5.2). This also includes the opportunities for basic and further training in artistic professions provided above all by the 29 colleges of art and 24 colleges of music, drama and dance operated by the federal states (Länder) as well as the four federal academies jointly funded by the Federal Government and the federal states (Länder).

Support for individual art forms and individual artists in the various fields of artistic endeavour are likewise very important. A special support for business, start-ups, freelancers and self-employed professionals in the culture and creative industries is offered by the Federal Government Centre of Excellence for the Culture and Creative industries; with 8 regional offices they offer individualised services and consultation.
