Cyprus/ 7. Public institutions in cultural infrastructure

7.3 Status and partnerships of public cultural institutions

The governmenthas been traditionally responsible for national cultural institutions (see chapter 2 and chapter 3.2).  The Church is also an important key player in the cultural life of the island, not only because all major festivities relate to the Orthodox tradition (i.e. Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, etc.) but also because of the rich tradition in Byzantine art and music (see Byzantine Museum and Art Gallery).

In addition to the above, a number of private organisations in the sectors of music, dance, theatre etc. promote cultural events – frequently most of the times with the support of the Ministry of Education and Culture, following an application for a state grant.
