Austria/ 3.4 International cultural co-operation

3.4.5 Cross-border intercultural dialogue and co-operation

In addition to already existing networks and partnerships (ARGE Alpen Adria; ARGE Donauländer, ARGE Carinthia / Slovenia, the International Bodensee (Lake Constance) Conference, 10 Euregios etc.), Austria has participated in 25 programmes in the framework of the 2007-2013 EU Structural Funds. These include seven cross-border programmes (Austria-Germany / Bavaria, the Alpine Rhine-Lake Constance-Upper-Rhine, Austria-Italy, Austria-Slovenia, Austria-Hungary, Austria-Slovakia, Austria-Czech Republic), three transnational programmes (Alpine Area 2007-2013, Central-Europe, South-East Europe) and four interregional cooperation programmes (Interreg IV C, ESPON, INTERACT and URBACT).

Above and beyond this there is one nationwide programme and eight provincial programmes for regional competitiveness and employment as well as two phasing-out programmes with the aim of convergence in Burgenland, each of which are co-financed by the European Social Funds (ESF) or European Funds for Regional Development (ERDF). As a study by the österreichischen kulturdokumentation shows ("Der Kreativ-Motor für regionale Entwicklung / The Creative Motor for Regional Development", Vienna 2011) a large number of arts and culture projects have been realised in the framework of these programmes, above all cross-border and transnational projects in cooperation with neighbouring countries.

Awards for cross-border activities have been granted by the federal and regional governments.
