Dear Compendium friends and users,
We are pleased to announce the new web version of the
Compendium information and monitoring system about Cultural Policies
and Trends in Europe.
- Read a monthly editorial
introducing a debate on a current cultural policy issue.
The first editorial by Compendium author Carla Bodo suggests a New
Deal to help reverse declines in cultural employment in the midst
of the current financial crisis. Join the discussion or suggest
your own editorial!
- Vote! A poll has been
introduced to generate your feedback on the editorial. This month
we ask users whether they think a stimulus package is needed to
reverse declines in cultural employment. So far, 61% of users
agree, 27% think that the public intervention is not needed and
12% are not sure.
- Nominate a cultural policy actor
of the month. The Compendium wants to give recognition
and visibility to cultural policy actors who have introduced new
ideas that led to changes in your country or on the European
level. These ideas may have led to, for example, a new cultural
policy strategy, an innovative funding programme, institutional
reform or partnerships between public and private organisations
You can nominate someone working for the Culture Ministry, a
regional or local authority, a quasi-governmental body, a
non-governmental organisation, cultural or media institution.
He/she could also be an artist, cultural professional, a cultural
policy researcher or academic.
In addition to the established Compendium features, new sections
have been added in the system.
- Countries:
Quick Facts open each of the Compendium country profiles to
provide users with a glimpse of key information and data for
individual countries. To access the country profiles, click on
"cultural policy profile" in the left hand menu.
- Statistics:
a new section compiling comparative tables and graphs on
population, participation, markets, employment, public funding.
Our established cultural price index on goods and services has
been enhanced with OECD - PPP data!
- Comparisons: In addition to the updated
comparative tables on cultural policy governance and other
issues, we have added a new section that compiles articles on
comparative methodologies and the links between research and
policy development. Send us your articles for review and have them
published in this section!
- Monitoring:
The Compendium Community is engaged in a number of exercises to
monitor the implementation of standard setting instruments in the
cultural sector and keeps track of new developments in national
laws and policies.
- Themes:
Continues to present integrated information on cross-cutting,
transversal issues of priority to cultural policy makers, analysts
and researchers on cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue,
status of artists, international cultural cooperation and
mobility. A new transversal space is being developed on ethics and
human rights in cultural policy.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your
involvement in the continuous development of the Compendium system.
We look forward to hearing from you about the new
Compendium system and its features.
With best wishes from
the Compendium Editors Kathrin Merkle, Danielle Cliche and
Andreas Wiesand
